Did Cliff Try To Deal Leaf’s 09 Pick?

I haven’t seen the source, but Damien Cox wrote this in his blog this am:

“Then comes a published report this morning that suggests the Leafs were willing to trade their 2009 first rounder on a conditional basis and a couple of prospects to Anaheim for Mathieu Schneider and youngster Bobby Ryan.”

I have scoured around a bit from Detroit this afternoon, but I have seen this report. The deal doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me but…..

Anyone see this report yet?

Here is Damien post

  1. Here is a theory:

Burke wants to keep his propsect Bobby Ryan over in Toronto for when he eventually comes to take over the shop.

    Plausible?

Thanks, funny that isn’t on the TSN site here in the US….

  3. Is it just me or has Ryan not exactly set the world on fire. He has had a couple of sniffs with the Ducks over the past two years but never really blew anyone away.

Also Damien really got smacked around hard in the comments section, basically 90% of the commenters called him an idiot and he was forced to issue a “retraction” of sorts claiming that he was only saying it was a bad deal because Ryan will be a potential free agent before draft pick that the Leafs would have traded for him would be. Sounds like a great strategy for running a team.

Meanwhile today he speculates that the Leafs could be trading Kaberle by the deadline for a draft pick:

“If Leafs management is coldly realistic, there is great opportunity ahead in the next few months to shave a year or more off this rebuilding process by moving proven players for prospects and picks, rather than swapping picks and prospects for more established help, as it’s believed Fletcher already has attempted to do.”

Hmm sounds like the same strategy he was bashing yesterday despite the tag on qualifier about swapping picks for “established help” would that be Ryan? Hardly an established NHLer.
