Ron Wilson “Is Garbage”…Don Cherry ~ Clip Du Jour

I was listening to Ron Wilson on with Watters (whom we know refer to as Pad Thai) and Brady last night and Wilson and Pad got to talking about Don Cherry. They were alluding to a feud between Wilson and Cherry. I had no clue what they were talking about. I looked around the net a bit and didn’t see much of anything. Today the folks at Kuklas Korner put 2 and 2 together for me, it’s a feud that apparently started since Wilson was hired. I thought I would add to it a bit.

Wilson, has to be on the verge of rubbing some of the players the wrong way. I thought about it last night when he was on with Pad and Brady, but Wilson’s constant shots at his guys is going to wear thin sooner rather then later. I know the truth hurts, but still he has to get guys to play for him:

“”I know where our talent level is, and when you’re not blessed with a lot of talent there will be inconsistencies,” Wilson said” This from the Globe and Mail

It is not the first time he has made comments like this. I am just starting to wonder when the act will run it’s course? I asked a couple of guys last night this question, and I am curious what everyone thinks. Who’s act wears out first in Toronto, Burke or Wilson? I am not asking who gets fired first. Both guys have strong personalities. Both tell it like it is. One is a GM the other a coach. I just have the sense that at some point the press and the fans are going to tire of their public persona, their shtick. Who do you think goes first?

Over to Mr Personality. Grapes was on with Richie Maclean and Jack Armstrong earlier today and Cherry gave it to Wilson yet again in response to the quote below:

In a voice trying to imitate Wilson ” oh, well look at me, what a great job I am doing with this garbage, almost a .500 team…..have you ever heard a guy talking about his players the way he does? Richie said he was surprised about him doing it in the media- pretty soon these guys are going to say well you’ve convinced us. Been in this game 50 years, never seen this before. I am a players coach, when I am asked about him, I have no problem answering that I have no use for a guy who runs his players down to show how good a coach he is, and i think it’s garbage… I don’t care whether they like it or not.

It’s worth listening to!

Listen to Cherry Grapes on the Fan…. it gets good around the 14 minute mark

  1. Wilson shouldn’t utter a word until that 74% penalty killing rate improves. That’s the onlyt hing that’s garbage.

  2. FAIL.

That’s the ONLY THING that’s garbage.

  3. In the army they break you down and then rebuild you, maybe that’s Wilson’s technique.I don’t see the value in babying the team with celebrations for small victories. Most coaches have a shelf life of maybe 4 years,Wilson has the advantage of a supposed talant rise running parallel with that timeline.

Well the good news is it seems to be working. They are playing right down to his expectations tonight! 🙂

  4. I’m old school…tough love / honest performance management behind closed doors….no need to embarrass your employees in public….especially the guys that are trying hard and are coachable…Imagine your boss calling you out daily in the media? The “these guys make millions per year and should be able to take it” argument is crap…millionaires are people too.

My guess is that Wilson will be successful in implementing appropriate systems that align with Burke’s player profile / evenual team make-up. It wouldn’t surprise me though, if 2-3 seaons down the road, Wilson’s approach stiffles team growth and playoff success and a new guy is brought in to complete the journey….That said, maybe the coach is coachable and Burke helps make him a winning coach? Let’s hope…would be nice for Ron to finally win the big one and do so in Toronto with his buddy Burke and after being a part of the rebuild from day 1.

  5. To answer your question, Wilson’s welcome runs out first. He has to face the media at least twice a day, Burke can pick his spots.

It’s amazing how much media relations matters in this town. Maurice couldn’t coach, but since he excelled in the scrums the media gave him way too much rope. Wilson’s allegedly arrogant with the media and his death watch starts before the team plays 44 games.

The last time Don Cherry was relevant, Mulroney was Prime Minister, rappers wore large clocks instead of bling and formal gowns had bigger shoulder pads than Garth Snow.

Eyebleaf – you know I love you buddy, but until Vesa learns to stop a puck, the PK is going to be in the crapper.

Eggbert – I agree with the military analogy, Wilson and Burke need to break this team down before it can be built back up.

  6. I’ve noticed Don Cherry taking swipes at Wilson on HNIC since the season began, and to be perfectly honest, I think he’s doing it to toot his own horn, as if to say he knows best, and to also keep fans expectant and tuned in every Saturday night.

Seriously though, is he retarded? How can a coach constantly put down the quality of his team, yet get effort from them that exceeds all expectations? I think what Ron says in the media, and what Ron says in the locker room are 2 totally separate things. There is no way that he says the stuff that he says to the media in front of the players. Sure, he may be tough with some of them, but at the same time, I get the sense that he’s very supportive and encouraging to many of the players.

What I think Ron, and the Leafs for that matter, have been doing exceptionally well is capitalizing on the obvious lack of individual talent to portray the team as crap, and to not expect much out of them. This in essence gives the media little to gripe about, and for the first time in years, takes the constant media pressure off of the players for a change. So many times in past years, with pressure from the media and fans, the team never was able to develop talent without those players being under close scrutiny to perform and develop qucikly, many times resulting in the Leafs trading that talent for veterans that help immediately.

Ultimately I think they’re doing the right thing.

  7. I am generally a big Don Cherry fan but his beef with Wilson this year is a little tiresome. Sure Cherry supposedly never called out a player while he was a coach but he certainly hasn’t hesitated to belittle some of them since his departure from coaching.

And he has leveled a fair amount of scorn at a lot of Leafs players in recent years. Ponikarovsky and Steen in particular have been called out as “stiffs” more often than not and this year he has gone after Deveaux and some other players for not fighting.

So why is ok for Grapes to publicly humiliate players on a national forum on a weekly basis but it isn’t ok for Wilson to say that certain players aren’t playing up to expectations. I don’t remember Wilson ever calling anyone a “stiff” or a “bum”.

  8. If Cherry is such a good coach and he knows so much about it, why doesn’t he get behind the bench again? Probably because his knowledge of coaching is as outdated as his clothes.
I used to be a fan of this guy, but now the DVR spares me from his weekly idiocy spotlight. I bet Cherry is gone from CBC before Wilson or Burke are gone from the Leafs, as I think the folks at CBC have puckered anteriors when he’s live on the air.

  9. Tough love coaching can and does work, for a while anyway.
But one of the keys to that strategy working is defending your guys to the public. You have to stand up for them and earn their respect, then the tough part works.
To just be a jerk in public and private is not an effective coaching strategy.
It’s about accountability, and eventual Wilson will be held accountable too.

  10. It is possibke for Wilson to go too far, but not when expectations are this low.

This team could completely give up on him and play as pylons….but Wilson will be here next year and the year after. If the players want any chance of being here, or anywhere of their own choosing, then they best buy into uncle Ron’s system.

At this stage, this is a coaches team, not a players team.

To date I think Wilson has done a good job…tell me anyone expected them to be this far out of the race for the bottom at this stage. However, Ron probably should keep the comments in the dressing room for the next couple of weeks.

At some point the players need to see a reward, here or somewhere else, for the effort. Fine line between losing and having a losing culture.

Every coach’s act wears out. The good ones are able to last longer then others. It says here you can’t keep bashing people and expecting them to work hard for you. From my perspective, I have been fortunate enough to work for some great people. The best ones were those who would rake you over the coals to your face when needed but would defend you all day long out in public. We will see if Wilson learned anything from his last gig in due time.

  11. Cherry must sound like grandpa stuck in the past,to anyone under 40.For anyone over 40,remember when you were around 20, and how dated it would sound if a guy always brought up Rocket Richard or Terry Sawchuck. His voice is going too.

    • torontosportsmedia

Under 40 here! Grapes is ok. Again, he is smart enough to market himself (or surround himself with someone who can). He has made a ton of dough on his name, his video’s and his shtick. I am stunned that he hasn’t gone after Cliff Fletcher who made several similar comments to those made by Ron Wilson. You get sick of Grapes the more you listen. Like Hanky, he is further evidence that hockey in the right markets is strong…

  12. If you want to talk marketing, that’s an entirely different story in regards to Cherry. He has done extemely well, and tapped this market like a genius for a number of years.
