Did The Media Screw Up Again?

I read the Fan590 lineup this afternoon and to be honest, when I looked at the name Chantal Petitclerc, I didn’t have a clue who that was. What’s strange is that I wasn’t even interested enough to google her or to think about listening in to PTS. I got in the car at about 6:08, the time I know they usually come back from the news and advertisements and while the radio was set to 590, I instantly turned to 640 because I had no interest in know who Chantal Petitclerc was irrespective of the fact that she was apparently going to be on for the entire hour.(the radio was on 590 because when I got in to work I didn’t want to listen to Harry Capitto)

I then learned tonight that Chantal Petitclerc was the winner today of the Lou Marsh Award, which is recognizing Canada’s top athlete for the present calendar year. To say that I was a little surprised would be putting it mildly (you’re not a little anything Neuman!). Now, let me say this carefully. The surprise stems from the fact that I have never heard of Chantal Petitclerc. The surprise stems from the fact that if I were going to wager some of Doug MacLean’s money, I would wager a lot of it that a very large percentage of Canadian’s were like me, having never heard of Chantal Petitclerc.

Now, before you go calling me insensitive or sexist and anything else derogatory, let me say this. After reading Chantal Petitclerc’s accomplishments I am thoroughly impressed. “In Beijing, Petitclerc won five gold medals. She set three world records, two of them coming in races held only 90 minutes apart. Her wins in the T54 category of spinal injury ranged from the 100-metre sprint to the 1,500-metre test of wills. She retired from track racing after the games, bringing her consecutive gold medal streak to an end at 10.” Anyone who isn’t impressed by those accomplishments is an ass.

The question is, is this a fair representation of the Lou Marsh award? For those who aren’t familiar with the award, the award goes to Canada’s top athlete, either professional or amateur, as judged by a panel of journalists. Make no mistake, in my opinion, this shouldn’t be a popularity contest, but how does someone win this that so few people know about? I guess one possibility is shame on the majority. Interestingly, at least to me, there are a lot of complaints on many message boards and in the comments section to a lot of stories on the subject that suggest that she shouldn’t have won because she didn’t compete against a large field of competitors. The argument goes something like this. Given the nature of her condition she competed in those areas where only extremely wealthy countries could compete due to the costs involved in these types of competitions. (Don’t shoot the messenger, I am just telling you what is out there in great numbers.)

On the flip side, the Star, who used to employ Lou Marsh as a reporter, has a poll running asking if Chantal Petitclerc was the right choice. As I write this, the yes’s are ahead of the no’s 470 to 93. McCowan, for the record is a amongst the voters for this award.

Those crying foul are pointing to Justin Morneau, the Canadian born first basemen of the Minnesota Twins. Morneau is the first Canadian ever to win the home run derby (not that alone is reason to win the award in question), but also In 2008 Morneau batted .300 with 23 home runs and 129 RBI. Morneau finished second in the balloting for AL MVP. Raise your hands out there if you think if Morneau played for the Blue Jays or even a larger market team in baseball he wouldn’t have won the Lou Marsh.

Here is my take. i think at times we as Canadians try too hard to do the right thing and as a result we screw it up by not doing the obvious thing. I am not angry about this, and I know that there is no tone in these posts, so let me make that clear. I don’t usually pay much attention to awards like this. I don’t want to give the impression that I am not impressed by what Chantal Petitclerc accomplished. However the question is, was she really Canada’s top athlete of next year? If Michael Phelps were Canadian would he have won the award? If Chantal Petitclerc were American would she won the award? Me thinks we over Canadianized this one…. I am sorry to say. In any event, to Chantal Petitclerc and her friends and family congrats on all you did, sorry so many of us were unaware.

More Trouble For Predators Owner- Boots in Deep Trouble

Eat your heart out McCowan:

“The Securities and Exchange Commission filed today a civil injunctive action against Silicon Valley venture capitalist, William J. “Boots” Del Biaggio III, in federal district court in the Northern District of California alleging that he engaged in two distinct securities fraud schemes, defrauding investors, banks and private lenders out of $65 million. The complaint alleges that Del Biaggio used the funds to maintain a lavish lifestyle, which included buying an interest in a professional hockey team, satisfying substantial gambling debts, and paying expenses on his family’s luxury home. Without admitting or denying the complaint’s allegations, Del Biaggio has agreed to a permanent injunction from further violations of the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws. Del Biaggio also has agreed that, at a later date, the court in this matter shall determine the amount of ill-gotten gains (disgorgement) and civil monetary penalties that Del Biaggio shall be required to pay.”

This from the SEC website directly…

“According to the Commission’s complaint, Del Biaggio engaged in two distinct securities fraud schemes. First, Del Biaggio fraudulently pledged securities owned by innocent customers of a San Francisco-based broker dealer as collateral for more than $45 million in personal loans. Beginning in August 2007, Del Biaggio obtained brokerage account statements of unknowing customers with the help of a friend who was a managing director at a San Francisco brokerage firm, and then falsified the account statements to make it appear that Del Biaggio owned the assets in the accounts. To obtain more than $45 million in loan proceeds, Del Biaggio supplied the forged account statements to multiple banks and private lenders and signed agreements pledging the securities in the innocent customers’ accounts. As alleged in the complaint, Del Biaggio used $25 million of the loan proceeds to purchase an interest in the Nashville Predators professional hockey team, and used the rest for other personal expenses”

This just isn’t good… No matter that one is innocent until proven otherwise:

“In the second scheme, according to the Commission’s complaint, Del Biaggio misappropriated more than $19 million from individual investors he advised. The Commission alleges that between 2003 and 2008, Del Biaggio used his reputation as a prominent venture capitalist and role as the founder and CEO of established venture firm Sand Hill Capital L.P. to entice dozens of his advisory clients to invest in three investment funds he formed. The complaint alleges that Del Biaggio then misappropriated the money or used it to buy stocks which he then pledged as collateral for personal loans. The Commission alleges that Del Biaggio used the proceeds of his fraud to pay for other business and personal expenses.
Separately today, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California (USAO) also filed criminal charges arising from some of the same conduct that is alleged in the Commission’s complaint.
The Commission’s investigation is continuing. The Commission acknowledges the assistance of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Toronto Radio Wars

Ok- so it’s not much of a war but there are some interesting trends to watch and the game is about to change.  What am I talking about?  The Fall radio results book just hit and the numbers aren’t really that good for anyone here in Toronto anyway….

While McCowan remains king (and with his years of experience is anyone that surprised), the interesting result is the downward trend in his numbers, McCown has dropped FOUR straight books though in 25-54 and 35-54…Are the drops dramatic?  No.  Is it a trend?  Yup.. McCown’s show on The Fan 590 dropped in total share to a 7.8 share from 8.0.  Make no mistake that 7.8 is a GIANT…  Wilbur/Brady dropped to a 2.3 share from 3.1.

Wilbur and Brady dug a little deeper into McCowan’s numbers in the older male demographic (dopes like me 35-54)their 2.6 per cent to McCown’s 6.5.

The trend at lunch is exactly the same…. The Fan’s Hockey Central (5.4) leads in 25 to 54 guys over Leafs Lunch (4.2), when the demographic is 35-54 Leafs Lunch leapfrog’s Hockey Central 5.4 to 4.6 (leafs lunch to Hockey Central)

The most telling number for me however is the drop in the Fan morning show numbers, from a respectable 5.4 to 4.6….. 4.6??????  That is what the Fan can do in the AM????  If I am over at 640 I take a long hard look at that time slot and figure there is one we can win.  The afternoon slot on the fan, the one after lunch yet before McCowan had a 4.4 (down from 4.9)  If the morning show doing all sports is only getting .2 better then the usual graveyard between 1-4 you know there is a problem….

Now the good news:

“The measurement of radio audiences will undergo a major change next year when it moves to a system of personal people meters in which respondents clip on a device that electronically records the stations they listen to.The current system requires respondents to report in a diary their listening habits. It’s considered unreliable, particularly so for the sports radio market, where male listeners are unlikely to take the time to fill out the ballot.”

This is a huge change, who the hell ever would fill out a diary when we have the technology to really meter behavior???  Don’t think this makes a difference?:

“In this measurement, the PPM system was used as well as the diary system in the Montreal market. The discrepancies were stunning. At CKAC, the French-language station, the PPM results reported three times the audience for Montreal Canadiens broadcasts than did the diaries. The Team 990 afternoon drive, which, according to the diary system, decreased in market share, made big gains in the PPM results. The PPM system also reported several Montreal stations with cumulative weekly audiences of more than one million listeners.”That’s completely unheard of,” a radio executive said. “Normally, only a couple of Toronto stations have a one million cume [cumulative audience].”

So once this new system is active we will have a better idea of what is what…..

Here is my take.  Stellick and Laudry are the only game in town.  It shows in their numbers and in the product. Once again we in the market place are getting the short end of the stick.  There is no one source for hard hitting sports coverage during the drive in hours…  Personally I think Stellick is fantastic, I think he needs a different type of co-host.  Landry has been in the morning slot for a long time and I think it shows…   Hogan follows up and no where have I seen any numbers on his show.  Again, personally, he looses me minimum 2 days a week.  The first sound of Argos or CFL and I am out.  Second his Football Friday NFL coverage is brutal, I would and do listen to ESPN Radio or Dan Patrick for my NFL fix.  To that slot is borderline unlistenable.  At lunch my first choice would be to marry Dreger with Kypreos.  I like them both.  The other 2 guys?  Not so  much..(see more on Wilbur below)… MacLean/Armstrong I happen to think is good radio.  Besides MacLean’s constant yapping about his money, they work well together and I think they both provide insight into their areas of expertise we don’t get all that often…

The Drive home…. McCowan taking calls is classic. He plays the roll so well and the people who call in now it.  As I have said before his guests are great.  I love Dan Shulman, I like Rod Becker (or is it Rod), I haven’t heard a better NFL guest then Peter King.  Despite his recent disappearance act there is still only 1 Bob McKenzie.  I prefer bob Elliott to almost any other sports writer in town and of late I have new found respect for both Jeff Blair and Richard Griffin.  As much as I used to like Stephen Brunt he almost has become too brainey for me and I won’t even discuss Jim Kelly.  I have a bias for when Kirke is on and can’t believe he puts Rose D on the air. Deacon is ok, but certainly isn’t that opinionated.  In summary I find of late anyway that his show has become overly predictable.  the ongoing affinity for Boots Delbiaggio is beyond boring.  However, McCowan gets amazing segments out of the owner of the Habs and guys like Bill Daily.  The age lag is surprising to me in that McCowan’s strength is the business aspect of sports which I thought would be much more appealing to the 35-54 crowd then the numbers suggest.

Up the Dial at 640, Brady is a huge and I mean HUGE improvement over all of Wilbur’s previous co-hosts.  When Bill Hayes hosts, I am on music, my cell phone or 680 (assuming McCowan is talking to Bert Randolph Sugar of course).  Dreger and Morrison are amazing.  I do wonder if it is a bit of overkill with these guys though.  I sense they are trying to spread their wings a little bit, fantasy football, hockey etc and I think that is a good play for them.  Where I still think they hurt is that Wilbur’s obvious bias goes way overboard.  It is so blatant that it makes him unlistenable at times.  Perhaps now that Burke is in control the anti ownership stuff will be toned down a notch.  Hi son is also gone from the Argos so perhaps the anti rogers/bills things will dissipate as well.  Look, next to MacLean there is no one on the air constantly on the air with more to say then he does.  He was an agent and assistant GM a high school coach and a color commentator.  He knows his stuff.  His anecdotes should be phenomenal.  He obviously watches a lot and talks a lot of hockey.  If he only spent more of his time on that he would be so much better.  I think in time this show will get better as it becomes more general and less leaf bashing.  I happen to really like their business guy Lou Schizas.  Their version of Happy Howie Jonas Segal isn’t that good, but he isn’t that bad.  He sounds like he is 12 and is a tad bit intimidated by Willis but perhaps he will grow into the role.  I think they really need to find a raptor insider and if I were them I would hire Scott Ferguson yesterday to be their baseball guy.  He owned the pre and post game blue jays shows of yesteryear and they haven’t been the same since he signed off….

Ok enough rambling about sports radio…..

Thanks to Bill Houston over at the Globe for providing these numbers so the one person who cares about them can re-report them. You can read the rest of his take here

More on Brian Burke- Prime Time Sports Jumped The Shark?

Don’t you love the talking heads complaining about the crazyness the Burke story has taken on? I mean clealy it is started by you and I, the fans. We are ones who talk about it ad nauseaum, who are the ones who write about nothing but??? The same “morons” who are complaining.

Damien’s blog today about the subject may be the best piece he has ever written. No seriously, it is that good:

“One, Burke is the best man available to do the job. If not the best man period, he is available. Hockey isn’t like the real world in which you can just go out and hire who you want. It’s an industry filled with tampering rules, and one in which the best executives in the game shake loose only occasionally, and never in large numbers.”

B I N G O !!!!!! Give the man a prize.

“Two, there’s no guarantee Burke will be successful in Toronto, at least if you define success as winning a Stanley Cup, not putting together three victories in a row in mid-December. The same would be the case if it was Ken Holland or Doug Wilson or Jim Rutherford getting the job. No guarantees of ultimate success. Burke might not be able to do any more with the Leafs than he was able to do with the Vancouver Canucks, which was assemble a good team that wilted in the spring. But let’s get one thing straight. He was very much the architect of the championship won in Anaheim.”

As I wrote the other day (sorry for the delay in writing again, that one took a little bit out of me and I am off to LA tomorrow for a week), this is not who may be available in May or June, it’s about who is available now. Damien is bang on, getting the greatest man alive doesn’t guarantee you anything. You have to hire the best guy available when they become available. The only sure thing right now is that Burke is available.

“It drives me nuts the number of people who have emailed and, in effect, stripped Burke of any credit for the Ducks winning it all. That argument suggests that Bryan Murray did all the legwork, that Jean-Sebastien Giguere was already there and both Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry had already been drafted. It is an argument for utter morons.”

Did you hear that Mike Hogan??!! M O R O N S….How can you ask what has this guy ever done and think you will have any respect in the marketplace.

“Its the same story everywhere. So while you might not endorse the choice of Burke as the next Leaf GM or like his preferred style of hockey, its just silly to try and rob him of any credit for what was done in Anaheim. Can he win in Toronto? Don’t know. The guess here is he can give this team a vibrant identity and make it into a solid playoff team in three years. Beyond that, who knows? He’ll get his shot, and if he can’t do it in five or six or seven years, somebody else will get their shot.”

The reality is nothing the Leafs ever do really is going to be blessed by more then 51% of the folks out there. Hell I can assure you if they ever win the cup, 49% of the people out there will find something to bitch about. That is fine, we have come to expect it. Trashing Burke is okay too, just do it for the right reasons!

That was Damien the Blogger, whom i like a hell of a lot more then Damien the Writer (sound familiar Richard Griffin) most of the time… Damien the Writer has some interesting predictions in today’s star too:

“Burke doesn’t hesitate and he doesn’t observe niceties. He’s ready to go and start remodelling the Leafs starting, oh, today, although it’s unlikely contract talks will start until Monday or Tuesday and, anyway, Burke’s got his 4-year-old daughter’s soccer team to coach this morning in Orange County, Calif. The Leafs, with Richard Peddie and Gord Kirke stickhandling the process, will likely make an opening offer early next week, but there’s no interview process here. They know him. He knows them. The Bryan Colangelo contract offers a usable blueprint. It shouldn’t take long.”

Seriously folks, others seem to think this is going to more difficult then separating conjoining twins. Burke either wants to be here or he doesn’t. The leafs either want him or they don’t. If the money being asked is reasonable a deal gets done. If not it doesn’t. They aren’t going to ask him to undergo testing or anything like that. They know what they are getting. Rest assured Burke has called Cliff to feel out the situation as well, and the same can be said of Ron Wilson.

“Then the renovation process will begin. For starters, Burke doesn’t despise small players, but he doesn’t want many of ’em. Maybe one or two. Maybe Mikhail Grabovski can stick around, but not Grabovski and Alex Steen and Jiri Tlusty and Jason Blake and Matt Stajan. He doesn’t terribly mind Europeans. Right now, the Ducks have two, Teemu Selanne and Sammy Pahlsson. The Leafs have 11 Europeans, only two of whom, Niklas Hagman and Jonas Frogren, really fit into Burke’s gritty ideal of an NHL player. The Leafs have for years preferred to act judiciously and only after careful consideration, terrified to make a mistake. They would rather hang on to a player for too long than make a risky swap. Burke, by contrast, acts impul- sively and sometimes emotionally. He knows the enormous value of high picks, having swung deals to select Pronger one year and both Sedins in another draft with Vancouver. He’ll love Luke Schenn. But he’ll want something high again next June, even if he has to trade to get it. The guess is once he takes over, this thing’s going to go 100 miles an hour. He hasn’t actually visited with Ron Wilson since the wedding of Wilson’s daughter in July, but they shouldn’t have much trouble co-ordinating a mutually acceptable design.”

Cliff has said all along his job is to clear the deck. To give his replacement a head start. I think everyone agrees that he has done that. That doesn’t mean (as I have written before) that more then a couple of the current pieces are going to be part of the eventual finishing product. There are guys we as fans have come to like to watch, but there is no love affair with any of them yet. Show us a plan and we will buy in (at least the 51% of us).

“What will take some care is the way in which Cliff Fletcher is moved aside. People will want to see Fletcher treated right. That said, Burke will assemble his own management team and it’ll probably include Dave Nonis. There’s no reason for this all not to happen very quickly. Burke’s hoping to go to Vancouver next week for a few days of R & R, but he might not get the chance.”

Show me a person who doesn’t want Cliff treated right and I will show you a person I would rather not know. The guy did all the dirty work and has done what he was hired to do. Why wouldn’t you do him right. I am not sure why you wouldn’t ever do someone right, but that’s another discussion.

Meanwhile, as you know (both of you) I always say that I listen to McCowan and prime time sports because of the amazing guests. It is not that McCowan is the greatest, or the smartest, I always am curious what his show will be about and how quickly he will get the news maker of the day on his show. Let me be the first to admit, he’s slipping. I have heard more about Boots Dibaggio the failed minority owner of the Nashville Predators on PTS in the last couple of months then any other story. It seems that is all they talk about. I agree it was a story, but man, move on. Then, the Brian Burke story breaks and Burke isn’t on PTS, he is on the lunch show with a fill in host???? Huh????? When Pat Quinn ran the Leafs he refused to go on with McCowan, is this something to be expected of Burke? I have no clue, but I did wonder that aloud in the mini the other night. I can tell you that I am getting more interested in the Brady /Watters how every night as their show improves, while PTS seems to be slipping.

Enjoy the game, more later.
